Brexit: Is it business as usual for the Sheffield City Region?

How is Brexit impacting Sheffield City Region businesses? Hear the results first at the Quarterly Economic Survey Breakfast on 7 October at Vulcan to the Sky.

Business leaders from across the Sheffield City Region will meet to hear the results of the first Quarterly Economic Survey since the EU Referendum vote and debate how they are managing the uncertainty around the general economy.

“The Quarterly Economic Survey is the biggest and most credible business survey in the UK.  This event will provide the first opportunity to really understand business sentiment in the Sheffield City Region following the historic vote by the British public to leave the EU,” says Dan Fell, ceo for Doncaster Chamber.

Over 300 local businesses completed the Sheffield City Region Quarterly Economic Survey sponsored by RBS South Yorkshire & North Derbyshire in Quarter 3 and reported on their past and forecasted profit, turnover, investment, recruitment and international trade.

Prof. Andrew Simpson, University of Sheffield Management School will present the survey results and compare them with the previous quarters to better understand any changes in the economy and what the ramifications might be.

The results will also show when Sheffield City Region respondents think when Article 50 should be triggered to leave the EU and what they think are the most pressing issues the Government needs to clarify and work on such as the current immigration status of EU employees and trading rules with EU countries.

Key economist, Paul Swinney from the independent Think Tank, Centre for Cities, will speak about Brexit, Globalisation and the Future of Work: What it means for the Sheffield City Region.

The Deputy Business Editor of the Yorkshire Post, Greg Wright, will facilitate a panel debate with high profile business leaders, Nigel Brewster – Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership, Richard Walsh – Pennine Stone, Gareth Owen – QFM, and Lee Bartlett – Fragomen Worldwide. They will discuss what, if any, changes, opportunities, and challenges they have seen for their businesses post Brexit and what the Government should be focussing on to support regional business.

Businesses need to be clear about what they want from Brexit and the role of the Chambers and local government is more important than ever to communicate this. Continues Dan: “The Sheffield City Region Chambers have been calling on Government – in recent months – to prioritise the economy over politics, a viewpoint that the business community has endorsed.  The survey results, to a large extent, will provide evidence as to how well the local business community thinks the government has done in rising to that challenge.”
