Undergrads, HMRC app is here to help simplify student finance

As students across the UK prepare to start university this September, HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is urging them to take advantage of the HMRC app, which provides essential information such as National Insurance numbers and tax details. This app can significantly ease the process of applying for student finance.

Students planning to apply for Fee Loans, Maintenance Loans, or Maintenance Grants for the 2024/25 academic year are encouraged to begin their applications now. Early application ensures that the necessary funding is processed and ready in time for the new academic year.

Recent data from HMRC reveals that in the 12 months leading up to March 2024, over 112,000 individuals contacted the National Insurance Helpline to retrieve lost or forgotten National Insurance numbers. Notably, nearly half of these inquiries came from customers aged 16 to 20, highlighting the importance of this information for young people, especially during the student finance application period.

May 2024 saw a peak in calls, with more than 6,400 young people reaching out to the helpline—a trend that coincides with the student finance application deadlines.

To reduce the need for such calls and streamline the process, students are being encouraged to download the free HMRC app available on GOV.UK. This app provides instant access to the necessary details, eliminating the need to call the helpline.

Donna Branagan, Director at Branagans Accountancy Services, emphasised the importance of this tool for students: “As the new academic year approaches, it’s crucial that students have all their financial details in order. The HMRC app is a fantastic resource that allows young people to quickly access their National Insurance number and other tax details without the stress of waiting on hold. I strongly encourage students to download the app and make use of this convenient service.”
