Prostate Cancer Awareness
In the UK, about 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. There is no screening programme, but the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test may help detect early prostate cancer.
Prostate Cancer UK are looking for the ‘missing men’.
In 2020 urgent referrals dropped by 52,000, this is thought to be due to the pandemic and people being reluctant to visit their GP. An early diagnosis can make a big difference, this means that thousands of men could be undiagnosed and have less chance of a cure.
It is important for men to be aware of their risk and to know the signs and symptoms. Contact your GP Practice and talk about your concerns.
There are three main risk factors for getting prostate cancer, these are things you can’t change.
- Your age, it mainly affects men aged 50 or over
- Family history of prostate cancer
- Being of Black or Afro-Caribbean background.
